Rockies sign Jimenez to 4 year extension

Rockies boost rotation with extension of Jimenez

Today the Rockies and pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez agreed to a 4 year contract extension through 2012.  There are club options for 2013 and 2014.

Last year Jimenez was one of the few bright spots for the Rockies. After a slow start Jimenez turned it around in July and finished with a 12-12 record to go along with a 3.99 ERA. He also pitched in the playoffs for the Rockies the year before when they went on their miraculous run of 20 wins in 21 games including postseason. The deal is worth 10 million over the 4 years with most of it backloaded like most contracts.

This is a great move by the Rockies to help solidify their shaky rotation. It was just announced Jeff Francis will most likely not be ready for the opener due to a nagging shoulder injury he suffered last year which caused him to miss most of the second half of last year.

The Rockies also recently acquired Jason Marquis in a deal with the Cubs to help anchor the bottom of the rotation. There have also been some rumors the Rockies might make an offer to free agent Josh Fogg who helped the Rockies into the world series in 2007 beating a number of teams aces earning the nickname "dragon slayer" from his teammates.
